Four to Go!

Wow! I shipped four artworks within 24 hours of each other this week. That’s the most ever in so short a period of time. The Singer II went to “Street Encounters,” a show hosted by the Texas Photographic Society. The show venue is the Rooftop Gallery at the Arlington (TX) Museum of Art, 201 W. Main St., Arlington, TX. Interestingly, this show has a companion show in the same venue: “Vivian Maier: The Color Work.” For those who don’t know, Maier was a Chicago nanny whose passion for and tremendous output of street photography did not get discovered until after…

A Matter of Scale, Part 2

And sometimes architecture is, indeed, about buildings and bridges! Yesterday I wrote about the architecture of lotus leaves; you can read that post here. Today I write to celebrate a beautiful bridge and an interpretation of that bridge that is now being exhibited in its third show! The John James Audubon Bridge crosses the Mississippi River between Point Coupee and West Feliciana Parishes in south central Louisiana. It is a “cable-stayed” bridge and, according to Wikipedia, has the second longest span between towers in the Western Hemisphere.* Of course, I didn’t know that when I decided to take the “back…

A Matter of Scale

I see architecture everywhere. Yes, buildings and bridges, of course. But what about leaves? I think so! So let me introduce you to the extraordinary architecture of the American lotus leaf (Nelumbo lutea). These plants are quite amazing in many ways. I am confident we have all admired the big yellow flowers with hearts of gold, and the dried seed pods that grace so many fall and winter bouquets. But how many have looked and wondered and been amazed by the backside of a lotus leaf in winter? What an extraordinary structure is revealed! “Lotus Fractal” is the result of…

“Unique,” Indeed

Many years ago when I was an undergraduate at the University of Iowa, a teacher of photojournalism helped me discover my passion for photography. I mean, I knew I like taking pictures and had since I was a kid. But it had never occurred to me that I was “creative” or could do anything remotely “artistic.” She encouraged me to see otherwise. I became a bit of a darkroom phenom. (Yes, I’m talking about the days of analog photography and wet darkrooms.) One of my classmates once told me he thought I could make a good print from a cardboard…

Two Online

I’m a bit behind. Somehow this blog, which I really love doing, often goes begging for lack of time. So here are a couple of online shows I’m way overdue to tell about. Celebration of Art 2020 was an all-media national show that began August 18 and ended yesterday, October 14. It was hosted by the Marin Society of Artists in San Rafael, Ca. My image in the show was “The Way of Grass 3,” and its another example of one of my favorite photographic experiences: finding the beauty in something mundane. This photograph was made in February of this…
