PTOP: Splish, splash…

Look closely. There’s a blue jay in the middle of that flying water! And he hogged the bath for a full 15 minutes. The mockingbord (below) had already had her turn. A red-headed woodpecker landed above the bath on the edge of the deck shade roof, but the jay just kept splashing mightily. The woodpecker gave up and left. I am learning from the birds! They are finally getting me properly trained. If I faithfully clean and refill the “birdbath” every other day or so, they reward me with exuberant displays. You just can’t watch them without grinning at the…

PTOP: Yellow-Crowned Night Heron

“PTOP” stands for “Peace in the Time of Pandemic,” and this blog series is my offering to the common good to help us through this time of physical distancing and searching for new kinds of community. It will feature moments of peace, perhaps better conveyed by the Hebrew shalom, meaning harmony, wholeness, completeness. So come along! Today we walk down a trail in Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge that traces a point of land jutting out into the lake on the east side of the boat ramp. Those of you who live at higher elevations might accuse us Louisianans…

Go online!

These are trying times. The Masur Museum in Monroe, La., closed a few weeks ago due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Yesterday, Easter Sunday, it sustained tornado damage. Thankfully, no one is hurt. Some outdoor sculptures blew over but the artworks are all safe. So… this is not a whine! Rather, I am deeply grateful that in trying times, we can think outside the box and do things technologically that were not possible not so long ago. The Masur’s 57th Annual Juried Competition is available online. You can take a virtual tour here. Be sure to do two things while you…

Off to Kansas!

This week I’m delighted to ship two works to the 2020 City of Overland Park Art at the Center Juried Exhibition. The show will be in the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center at 11902 Lowell Ave. in Overland Park, KS. Both works have appeared in previous juried exhibits. “Take Flight” was first invited to Art Flow 2019 in Baton Rouge, La., then this year was selected for the January Group Show at the Jones Gallery in Kansas City, Mo. I attended the opening reception for the January Group Show in Kansas City and the highlight of the evening was when a…

In the Masur!

I’ve been applying to the Masur Museum of Art’s annual competition for several years. This year for the first time I was accepted and will have one piece in the 57th Annual Juried Competition show. The exhibit opens this Thursday, Feb. 27. The opening reception is Friday the 28th, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Masur is at 1400 South Grand in Monroe. Guest juror Allison Glenn, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (Bentonville, AR), will speak at the reception and $3,000 in prizes will be awarded. I am especially pleased that one of my construction…
