50@50

That’s 50 artworks at $50 each. It’s a show the North Central Louisiana Arts Council has put on for the past several years, and it has been quite successful.

This year it is all online for the first time. Here’s a link to NCLAC’s new online gallery: 50@50 Show.

Barred Owl (Strix varia)

What I mean by “successful” in this case is that people are often ready to snap up small works at $50 a pop! I just checked and this year’s offerings are selling like hotcakes. If you want something, better get on with it!

I have two pieces in the show. My barred owl portrait has sold. I encountered this beauty at Lake Martin in South Louisiana while riding in a flat-bottom boat with about 12 other people! I was surprised the owl stuck around long enough to get this shot.

Lotus Fractal

My second piece, Lotus Fractal, is a close-up of the back of a dead lotus leaf. This is the side of the leaf that is flat against the water when the leaf is still green and living. In winter, lotus leaves stand up off the water and turn inside out, forming hundreds of amazing shapes as they hang upside down from the top of the stalk. And only then does the extraordinary architecture of the leaf become visible to human eyes.

This piece is still available. It is a 5×5 black and white print with a white mat in a white 10×10 wood frame. As the title of the show indicates, the price is $50 and a purchaser can pick it up at the Dixie Center for the Arts in Ruston.

Check out the show at the link above. A number of pieces have sold but there’s lots of good stuff left.
