The osprey nest appeared to be empty, at least temporarily, but Nana Buruku, the ancient cypress tree, still fills the swamp with her spirit. That’s my name for her. Sometimes I get to thinking I am crazy. And then an image that has already been “not invited” once or twice gets “invited,” and your faith in your own judgment and work is restored. At least momentarily! I just received an invitation from 311 Gallery in Raleigh, NC, to exhibit two works in their “Black & White 2019” juried show. I am delighted to report that two of my photographs from Costa Rica have been invited into a juried group show benefit for the Kansas City Zoo. My encounter with this tiny gladiator tree frog happened at Osa Interactive Gardens, a privately-owned habitat restoration project near Puerto Jimenez. The Gardens features numerous small ponds surrounded by native vegetation, and the native Costa Rican frogs are reproducing and thriving. What a contrast! So… one more story from Costa Rica. We spent a day on the Sierpe River. I’m sure I mentioned that before. And in addition to many species of birds and dozens of squirrel monkeys swinging through the trees, we saw plants. Of course we saw plants! Costa Rica is an awesomely verdant country. I’m delighted to report that “Red Flags over Atlanta” has won an Honorable Mention at the 27th Emerald Coast National Juried Arts Exhibition. As if the honor weren’t enough, it comes with a cash prize as well! I am especially heartened by this recognition because I have been photographing construction sites for a long time, and for a long time thought no one else would ever see the interesting and pleasing aesthetic in them that I do.
