Abstracting

That’s what photography does: abstract. All photographs are abstract at the most basic level because they pull out and preserve a moment in time and space from the ongoingness and continuity of things. Whatever else photographers might be up to–journalism, art, documenting the family picnic, messing around, whatever–they are in the business of abstracting. But that’s only the beginning. Once that moment abstracted from time and space is on the photographer’s computer, the fun begins. Well, I have a lot of fun shooting. So, more accurately, the fun continues. In the case of Nevermore, I wanted the image to also…

Four Online

October seems to be ‘online show month.’ Here are some options for your browsing pleasure. Ghost Dancers and Fibonacci on the Beach are two faves of my own work, so it’s fun that both are in a show called “Black & White.” Why black and white? Because when the main subject matter is filtering light and/or curving form, color is irrelevant, even distracting. Of course, I also love beach grass falling in perfect Fibonacci spirals and Spanish-moss draped cypress trees undulating to the light! This show is hosted by The Hummingbird & Dragonfly Art Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. You…

Colorful World

It’s a colorful world out there! And some of my most colorful works are currently in shows. The three above are all in the “Small Works” show at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Many galleries host small works shows in the fall to make modestly priced art available to Christmas shoppers. My pieces are all 7×7 prints in a 12×12 frame. This is the second time the RI Watercolor Society has included my work in one of their occasional open-media shows. And I’m tickled pink! I have a great admiration for watercolor and would love to be able to do…

Bears & Butterflies

Well, bear–one bear–and many, many butterflies. As you can see by the slanting golden light, I encountered the bear late in the afternoon as I was leaving Tensas River NWR, which is indeed the home of many Louisiana Black Bears. This bear was actually no longer in the refuge, but strolling along the edge of a field on the west side of Quebec Road, which takes visitors into and out of the north end of the refuge. I spotted the bear from quite a distance back. In fact, my first thought upon sighting a large, dark, 4-legged creature crossing the…

Creature Encounters

I can’t think of much that is more gratifying than an up-close and personal encounter with one of the scores of amazing creatures with which we share this planet. I use hashtags to identify themes in my photography, so go online and search for #CreatureEncounters. You’ll find more of my fave works. Recognize, of course, that when I say “up close,” I am speaking relatively. I never was very close to the osprey and its prey in Angel of Death. But our encounter extended for a 15 to 20 minute period as I followed the bird clutching its prey from…
