It’s a colorful world out there! And some of my most colorful works are currently in shows. The three above are all in the “Small Works” show at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Many galleries host small works shows in the fall to make modestly priced art available to Christmas shoppers. My pieces are all 7×7 prints in a 12×12 frame. Bears & Butterflies

Well, bear–one bear–and many, many butterflies. As you can see by the slanting golden light, I encountered the bear late in the afternoon as I was leaving Tensas River NWR, which is indeed the home of many Louisiana Black Bears. This bear was actually no longer in the refuge, but strolling along the edge of a field on the west side of Quebec Road, which takes visitors into and out of the north end of the refuge. Creature Encounters

I can’t think of much that is more gratifying than an up-close and personal encounter with one of the scores of amazing creatures with which we share this planet. I use hashtags to identify themes in my photography, so go online and search for #CreatureEncounters. You’ll find more of my fave works. Recognize, of course, that when I say “up close,” I am speaking relatively. I never was very close to the osprey and its prey in Angel of Death. Maybe the reason I have trouble driving past farm machinery working the fields, grain elevators, and grazing livestock without stopping to take pictures is because I grew up on an Iowa farm. Whatever the reason, I have been an intrigued observer of Louisiana agriculture since I moved here, and have intermittently, between other fascinations, photographed it. By now, I could do an entire show of Louisiana Agriculture, and indeed I would love to do that, but… where? What kind of venue would be interested in an agriculture show? Dragonflies and cypress trees! I did not know either until I moved to Louisiana some 20+ years ago. I’m sure we had dragonflies in Iowa, but I paid them no attention. Cypress trees? Nope. Of course not. Learning to appreciate the beauty of a swamp was one big adjustment for this yankee, and cypress trees sure helped.
