  1. Merry Christmas, Bette! Glorious beach image. Where’s that?

  2. I’m on Dauphin Island, the island off the coast of Alabama that helps form Mobile Bay. It is said to be the “sunset capital of the world”! The entire west end of the island is beach for 10 miles with no buildings, so an unencumbered view of the sunset is always possible!

    1. I love the term “thin places”. At this beach I can easily imagine I might think of it as one of those special thin places. Part of a definition I’ve read is, “A place where the veil between this world and the eternal world is thin.” And that’s so beautiful, it’s complete enough for me! I hope your stay is a joy and delight!

  3. Indeed, Liz, that is exactly how I think of West End Beach on Dauphin Island. The word I have used is “liminal.” It is the first place I visit when I arrive and the last I visit before I leave. I was just there for about an hour late this afternoon because I must head home tomorrow. Walking on West End Beach is always a spiritual experience for me.

    1. It’s delightful to learn about this place that’s so special to you. There’s plenty of hills where we live and it’s rural. Occasionally on a fine day we’ll be driving along a road that climbs steeply – seeming to lead straight into the beautiful blue sky – like heading for the heavens! Of course it’s very momentary but glorious none-the-less. Or hopping out of the car in the countryside and hearing skylark(s) singing, love that so much. I wonder if you have skylarks in Louisiana?

  4. Interesting question, and I wasn’t sure so I checked with Audubon Society. The only lark native to North America is the Horned Lark, it’s “horns” being little tufts of feathers visible only at close range. I have never seen one. We do have quite a few of a bird called “Meadow Lark,” but it, in fact, is related to the blackbirds, not your skylark. Common names can fool a person!
