Day 1: Monkeys!

Yes, but the day began with a delightful flight from San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, to Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula. And from there, we piled into Land Rovers–some of us. The lucky ones got into a Mercedes van!

Crossing Costa Rica in a small plane, the farmers’ plots stood out from the rainforest.

Let me introduce you to the roads of Costa Rica. Actually, I need to go back and take a few photos of the pothole filled road–a short stretch from the airport to our beautiful resort Crocodile Bay.

A much longer stretch of truly rough road awaited us for our afternoon Monkey Tour. Folks, I’m going to have to go back and take a few photos of the actual ROAD, which I didn’t do yesterday, being completely enthralled with the monkeys. And birds. And flowers. And other wonderful life…..

My biggest frustration of the day? Not the bumpy road. Not jumping in and out of the Land Rover a dozen or more time–always with the kind offer of help from our gracious and knowledgeable driver, Michael.

Howler monkey in a contemplative mood.

No. My biggest frustration of the day was also what was good about it. We stayed focused on the mission, which was monkeys. But… in doing that we passed so many things I wanted to stop and explore! Of course, had I been stopping the caravan every few hundred yards, we would never have made it to the lovely bar at the “end of the road” (not really; just where we turned around), where we got a potty break, a drink and a delightful encounter with a tree orchid.

Time for breakfast! Later, folks!
