Catching up…

Some years start out slow. This one did. Then all of a sudden I have images in three shows and haven’t said a word bout it. So here goes.

Urban Osprey

“World Untamed”–what a super show theme! Right up my alley, don’t you think? Marin Society of Artists is hosting the show in their Virtual Gallery from March 30 through May 30. You’ll be able to see the show here. Many thanks to juror Paul Kratter for selecting my work.

Urban Osprey was a natural to submit to this show. The very civilized telephone poles in the background put in high relief the fierceness of those spreading talons. Ospreys command respect. I’ve told the story of this shot many times. I followed the bird up the highway, from telephone pole to telephone pole, until she/he got tired of my pursuit and turned and glared directly at me. I took the hint and left, not sure if I had anything usable. This one still pleases me. It has been in two other shows.

Requiem for a Tree

Requiem is in an online show called “Extinction: Save the Planet 2024,” the 4th annual show with this title by Gallarium, a virtual gallery associated with the Biafarin International online art marketing platform. The purpose of the “Extinction” series is to heighten awareness and be a voice for our endangered creatures and habitats. I’m definitely here for that. The show will run April 10 to June 10, 2024. I will post a link on my FB Edge & Essence page as soon as I get it.

You might assume that this shot was staged, but that is not so. The tree stump was on a vacant lot in a city, although I can’t remember which one. (I need to look at the folder in the archive for a clue, but no time for that right now.) The flower had been placed there by someone else, but I thought it a touching gesture. The process here is called “spot color” and it’s not as hard as it looks. I use it sparingly because such things can quickly become faddish, but this seemed the ideal subject.

Good News or Bad

Another natural show and image pairing! Good News or Bad will soon go off to a brick and mortar show in a gallery called Artwise in Grand Forks, ND. The show is called “Lore.” Few creatures have more myths and tales and legends associated with them than crows. And they often contradict each other. For example, ‘when the crow caws, it’s good news’ vs. ‘When the crow caws, it’s bad news.’ So next time you hear a crow, just take your pick!

Creating this one was fun. I rarely spend time purposely manipulating my images to make them look less realistic, but I wanted this shot to look like a crow sounds. Kinda works, I think. Thanks to jurors Tait Simonson and Matthew Anderson for thinking so, too. The show will be up at Artwise May 4 – June 15.
