A new show called “Water Ways” opens in the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council gallery at 118 Cotton St. in West Monroe Monday, June 2. The opening reception is scheduled Thursday, June 5, 5 – 9 p.m. in conjunction with Downtown Gallery Crawl. Acknowledging that Louisiana is a state of waters in many forms, the Arts Council called for artworks that “explore how our lives, personally and/or regionally are shaped or influenced by water… literally and figuratively.” Have you ever tried cast net fishing? Place the loop at the end of the rope around your wrist, gather the rope in short…
“Blend” is back!
It’s the biggest arts party in Northeast Louisiana, and it’s happening Sunday, March 23, 5-7:30 p.m. in the TCE Lobby of the Clarke M. Williams Innovation Campus, 100 Century Link Dr., Monroe. I and lots of other local artists will be there with up to five artworks each available via silent auction, so it’s a great opportunity to add to your collection for a reasonable price. Moreover, the food, beverages, and live entertainment are more than worth the price of admission. A percent of art sales plus ticket prices benefit the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council, so your fun time will…
Little did I know…
Last summer I joined a butterfly count in Pass Christian, MS. We had a number of young people with us that day–members of Girl Scout Troop 4608. It was great to have them participate. Very little pleases me more than kids getting interested in the wonders of creation! Little did I know that one of them, Lillian May, was working on her Silver Award project. A few days after I got back home to Monroe, I received an email from the Troop leader. Well, the email was from the Troop leader, but the message inside was from “Lily.” Would I…
December: D’Arbonne CBC
“CBC” stands for “Christmas Bird Count,” an event sponsored by the Audubon Society that was begun on Christmas Day 1900 by ornithologist Frank Chapman and 26 fellow conservationists. I have been participating for only a few years, but it has become one of my favorite things to do. I am fully indebted to my friend, fellow certified naturalist and expert birder Roselie Overby, who lets me ride along with her and learn. By myself, I would be virtually useless. Indeed, my only marketable contribution when it comes to birding is that I occasionally get a really nice photo of a…
November: Denver
This 2024 Year in Review is dragging on a bit, but not for lack of images to share! Picking a place to feature for November was easy. Picking just a few images to share is hard! Because.. snow! I was in Denver to attend the opening reception of an art exhibit for new satellite members at D’Art Gallery, a co-op in the Denver arts district I have joined. In fact, the voluminous snow resulted in the opening reception being canceled. But what fun it was to tramp around and photograph snow for a change! I did get to see the…
