Cycles. The universe is organized by and around cycles. For those of us who practice the Christian faith, today, November 30, 2025, is the beginning of two important cycles. The first and most obvious is the annual cycle of seasons that guide our worship: Advent, followed by Christmastide, and so on. But the annual cycle of the church year is part of a larger, 3-year cycle created by the “Revised Common Lectionary,” whereby we schedule readings from the Bible to make sure we cover the most important stuff every three years. Between Here and There

That’s the title of the current exhibition of “satellite members” of D’Art Gallery, a cooperative in the downtown Denver arts district (900 Santa Fe). I joined the Gallery as a satellite member about a year and a half ago. Yes, the swamp is beautiful!

That was not immediately clear to me when I first moved to Louisiana. In fact, I was pretty leery of the swamp. It seemed oppressive, with strange smells and spikey plants and strangling vines and danger underfoot–such a contrast to the cathedral-like forests of the Pennsylvania ridges I left behind to move here. But I have never been one to cower indoors for too long, so gradually I ventured out and began to explore, and gradually I came to appreciate the beauties of the swamp. I ❤️ Chicago!

I go there several times a year. My trips always revolve around the opera season, but… they also always include photography. Chicago is great for photography! As one who lives in a city that really, really needs another bridge for crossing our beautiful Ouachita River, I”m envious of the 18 movable bridges that facilitate traffic flow across the Chicago River–and that’s in the Loop alone. But one–the one that used to carry freight trains on Carroll Avenue–is now fixed in the open position. Once all manufacturing ceased in the downtown area, it was no longer needed. The base at the…
